In the summer of 1799, the famous explorer Alexander von Humboldt visited Tenerife. He explored the archipelago within a week and even then recognized the uniqueness of the flora and fauna as well as the beauty of the sky over Tenerife. Today, Tenerife and La Palma are home to two of the most important astronomical observatories in the world. At the Observatorio del Teide and the Roque de los Muchachos, scientists explore the universe day and night. Astronomer Peter Habison reports on the locations of the observatories, the beauty of the landscape and the sky over the Canary Islands with numerous pictures.
