From the famous waffle slices to Austria’s most popular postcard motif, St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna is arguably Austria’s landmark par excellence. On this evening, we present Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral in a way you’ve never seen before: Michaela Obermayer and Reinhard Bengesser will take you on a 3D flight through the entire building, visit places with you that are otherwise not accessible, and travel with you through the history of the building. But the stories surrounding St. Stephen’s Cathedral also play a central role, telling us about religion, customs and tradition, but also about power and politics, which made St. Stephen’s Cathedral a companion of Austria’s destiny.

At the end, Linz-based director David Jentgens talks about his production of an Ars Electronica Home Delivery series on this project and explains how the theme of staging runs like a thread from the construction of a church in the Middle Ages to the digital age.

With “The Translucent St. Stephen’s Cathedral,” the Ars Electronica Futurelab has achieved yet another milestone in the visualization of historic buildings using 3D laser scanning: Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral was scanned with over 20 billion measurement points, and this resulting point cloud was enhanced with high-resolution images in collaboration with Scanlab Projects of London to provide a realistic 360° panoramic view at 28 interesting locations in and around the cathedral. However, due to the transparency of the point cloud, the structure of the building itself remains visible and allows completely new insights into the building.
