A beautiful nativity scene in VR. But how is it made? This episode of Inside Futurelab offers a quick overview of the project and technical insights into how the digitization of one of the world’s largest nativity scenes was achieved.

A more in-depth Deep Space Live session can be found here.

As an immersive, interactive and audiovisual experience, thirty of the previously carefully restored crib figures from the Mariendom Linz were restaged this year in collaboration with the Ars Electronica Futurelab. Further elements of the famous Christmas ensemble by the Munich sculptor Sebastian Osterrieder are to follow next year. Following a detailed presentation of the ambitious project via Deep Space LIVE, this episode gives a glimpse at the elaborate digitization process behind the scenes and the virtual staging of one of the largest nativity scenes in the world – with a Making-of from the Christmas laboratory in the crypt of the Mariendom and at the Ars Electronica Center.
