Music for piano 4-hands was one of Schubert’s musical passions, not simply a means of publicizing already existing work. He left us countless numbers of piano four-hand original compositions for every possible level of player, but also including some of his most original and profound compositions. Just a few months before his death at the tragically young age of 31 he composed and played for a small circle of friends the Fantasy in f minor, followed a month later by the Allegro in a minor (Lebensstürme).
The heroic drama „Rosamunde“ closed after only two performances at the Theater an der Wien in December 1823, but the 24 year old Schubert, already beset with severe health problems, enjoyed an enormous and lasting success for this sparkling musical score.
