In the foreseeable future, it will be possible to use digital identity cards on mobile devices such as smartphones and use these virtual cards to identify oneself not only in relation to digital services but also in the physical world. From web page login to proof of age and border crossing, a wide variety of scenarios should be possible with the same digital identity card. However, these developments also pose great risks for the individual privacy of citizens and users of such digital identities.
In this lecture, Dr. Rene Mayrhofer from the Institute of Networks and Security at JKU Linz will present the possibilities, chances and risks of digital identity cards on smartphones, discuss current developments and consider the next steps: How will the world change if digital identities are no longer stored and used in one’s own smartphone, but only in the so-called “cloud”? How can we continue to maintain control over our digital traces when our movements and actions in the physical world cast an increasing shadow over the digital one?
