Uncertain practices presents three artists within the framework of uncertainty. After studio visits, talks and a musical performance, join in on a live session with the artists Koray Tahiroğlu, Laura Beloff and Andy Best for a further dialogue on their practices.

Biographies

Koray Tahiroğlu is a musician and an Academy Research Fellow and lecturer in the Department of Media at Aalto University School of Arts. He is the founder and director of the SOPI (Sound and Physical Interaction) research group, coordinating research projects with interests including embodied approaches to sonic interaction, new interfaces for musical expression, deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with audio. Since 2004, he has been teaching workshops and courses on digital musical interactions.

Tahiroğlu has performed experimental music in collaboration, as well as solo, in Europe, North America and Australia. His work has been presented in important venues, such as Ars Electronica AI x Music Festival and STEIM. In 2018, he was awarded a 5-year Academy of Finland Research Fellowship.

Laura Beloff is an internationally acclaimed artist and a researcher at the cross-section of art, technology and science. In addition to research papers, articles and book-chapters, the outcome of her research is as a form of process-based installations, wearable artifacts, and experiments with scientific methods dealing with the merger of the technological and biological. Her research engages areas like human enhancement, biosemiotics, biological matter, artificial life, artificial intelligence, robotics and information technology in connection to art, society and the human. Since 2019, she is Associate Professor and the Head of ViCCA Program at Aalto University, Finland.

Andy Best is an artist with an international career encompassing sculpture, performance, media, net, and bio-art. He is an experienced curator, producer and educator, and is currently lecturer in sculpture within Transdisciplinary Arts Studies in the Department of Art, and a PhD candidate in the Department of Media at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Andy’s long-term collaborator is Merja Puustinen, his wife. Together, they were amongst the world’s first online artists, and during the 90’s they created beautiful, provocative multiuser 3D worlds on the internet. They developed a web-based 3D multiuser community platform as well as virtual pet and e-learning applications for mobile phones. Now they focus on developing playful, physically engaging installations and public art works. They have founded Espoo Kunsthalle, an initiative to bring critically engaged art to suburban areas, and the Imagining Godzilla artistic residency network platform, which uses artistic methods to investigate the environmental challenges facing the Baltic Sea.
