(Linz, 20.7.2021) Fascinating exhibitions, inspiring talks and conferences, theme-specific guided tours, workshops and great concerts with digital and/or classical music, and all this in Linz and 100 other locations around the globe: from September 8 to 12, the Ars Electronica Festival will once again take place as a hybrid event. This time, the thematic starting point for this journey around the world is the call for a “New Digital Deal.” At Ars Electronica Home Delivery on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, Martin Honzik (CCO of Ars Electronica) and Manuela Hillmann (Project Coordinator of Ars Electronica) will introduce a series of Festival Gardens that address the theme of “Earth.” The live stream will begin at 4:00 p.m. (CET). In addition, on Thursday, July 22, 2021, viewers of Ars Electronica Home Delivery will gain insight into the research work of Kyriaki Goni, who is currently exploring the topics of AI and speech interfaces as part of the ArtScience Residency at Ars Electronica. Start time is 2:30 p.m. (CET).

In the second episode of “Inside Festival,” Martin Honzik (CCO of Ars Electronica) and Manuela Hillmann (Project Coordinator of Ars Electronica) present various international Festival Gardens that are dealing with the theme of “Earth” this year. For example, Garden Indonesia, organized by the MAG (MediaArtGlobale) Festival, deals with the origin of sambal, a chili spice paste that has become a unique symbol of Indonesian culture thanks to the country’s fertile soil. La República de la Montaña, which hosts the Andes Garden, has launched a permaculture farm in Peñalolén and is spotlighting the community project “Cooking for Freedom.” A project born out of necessity, it uses the fruits of the Chilean soil to bring people together. ITMO University in St. Petersburg invites you on a journey to underground structures that become a manifestation of the soil of the Anthropocene: a reinforced concrete cave that tries to blend into the natural landscape and strives to be filled with new content.
Ars Electronica Festival
On September 18, 1979, the first Ars Electronica Festival saw the light of day in Linz. It was a pilot project that took the emerging digital revolution as an occasion to inquire into possible futures and to locate this inquiry at the interface of art, technology and society. With this philosophy, which is still valid today, the cyberneticist and physicist Herbert W. Franke (AT), the electronic musician Hubert Bognermayr (AT), the music producer Ulli A. Rützel (AT) and Hannes Leopoldseder (AT), then director of the ORF regional studio in Upper Austria, laid the foundation for the success story of Ars Electronica. Today, more than 40 years later, Ars Electronica is one of the world’s largest hybrid platforms for media art, a festival for digital music, a showcase for creativity and innovation, and a playground for the next generation.
User Manual for Digital Humanists: ArtScience Special

With the initiative of the “European Platform for Digital Humanism,” Ars Electronica and its partners from research, industry and culture are participating in an urgent reassessment of our relationship to the technologies we create and how we use them. This special issue of the User Manual for Digital Humanists is devoted to the research of Kyriaki Goni, who is currently completing the ArtScience Residency at Ars Electronica and is investigating AI systems and voice interfaces with her science partner Prof. Martina Mara of JKU Linz. The ArtScience Residency is made possible by a partnership between Ars Electronica and Deutsche Telekom and with the support of Johannes Kepler University Linz.

“Ars Electronica Home Delivery” is a weekly program that includes guided tours of Ars Electronica exhibitions, excursions to Ars Electronica Labs, visits to the Machine Learning Studio, concerts with real-time visualizations, Deep Space LIVE sessions, workshops with engineers and talks with artists and scientists from around the world, as well as offerings for schools, universities and companies. “Ars Electronica Home Delivery” aims to make the artistic and scientific exploration of the future accessible to the widest possible audience.
