(Linz, 9.8.2021) Fascinating exhibitions, inspiring talks and conferences, theme-specific guided tours, workshops and great concerts with digital and/or classical music, and all this in Linz and 100 other locations around the globe: from September 8 to 12, the Ars Electronica Festival will once again take place as a hybrid event. The thematic starting point for our journey around the world this time is the call for a “New Digital Deal.”
There‘s a lot going on at Ars Electronica Home Delivery this week: On Monday, August 9, Veronika Liebl and Kristina Maurer will present Part 5 of the series, “User Manual for Digital Humanists,” in which they introduce this year’s highlights from the European Platform for Digital Humanism. Christl Baur and Hannes Franks will dedicate the sixth edition of “Inside Festival” to the topic of “Sound Experiments” on Tuesday, August 10 at 4pm CET. On Wednesday, August 11, there will be another exciting presentation about St. Stephen’s Cathedral, this time entitled: “History and Stories, Episode 6: Toothache and Wine Mortar.” And on Thursday, August 12, there will be another instalment of the “Inside Festival” series, followed by a presentation of inspiring works from three categories of the Prix Ars Electronica on Friday August 13 by Emiko Ogawa and members of the jury.
User Manual for Digital Humanists: Festival Edition

User Manual for Digital Humanists is a series moderated by Veronika Liebl, Director of European Cooperation, and Kristina Maurer, Head of European projects in the Festival/Prix/Exhibitions department of Ars Electronica. Chapter 5 will introduce the program highlights of this year’s Ars Electronica Festival, which is taking place in the context of the European Platform for Digital Humanism. They will also speak with Michelle Thorne, Senior Program Officer at Mozilla Foundation and a member of Climate Action Tech, about her fantastic project Branch Magazine, which received this year’s Ars Electronica Award for Digital Humanity from the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.

Christl Baur, Head Ars Electronica Festival, and Hannes Franks, Producer of Performances at Ars Electronica, will devote the sixth edition of “Inside Festival” to the theme of “Sound Experiments” and present six very different projects.
In the online Garden Montréal, MUTEK presents a selection from this year’s artistic program, while the Garden Taiwan Taipei presents an avant-garde production titled AMORE, which focuses on conceptual, kinetic, digital, video and abstract art. Paul Chiang’s paintings form the foundation for bringing the art to life using 3D animation techniques. In “re-wire,” Felix Senk, Emil Steixner and Max-Jakob Beer wondered how to combine sustainability and music and built a MIDI controller out of an Arduino and electronic scrap parts. It can play 16 different, perfectly compatible loops independently of each other.
St. Stephen’s Cathedral – History & Stories Episode 6 / Toothache and Wine Mortar

Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral is the quintessential Austrian landmark. Michaela Obermayer and Reinhard Bengesser from the Ars Electronica Center invite you to Ars Electronica Home Delivery for a fascinating 3D trip through St. Stephen’s Cathedral, where they will not only show you places that are normally off-limits, but will also tell many interesting stories about religion, customs, power and politics. The north tower was never completed. Why that was the case, how we know about the quality of the 1450 vintage and how a church would get a reputation for curing toothache, you can find out in this episode.

Humans have been developing machines for thousands of years. But what drives us to do so? Martin Honzik, CCO & Managing Director of Ars Electronica, and Maaya Makino, Garden Manager of Ars Electronica, are dedicating the seventh edition of “Inside Festival” to the theme of “Robotinity” and presenting a total of four projects dealing with this topic.
Moritz Simon Geist created the robotic instrument “Vibrations” which deconstructs the sound and physical form of the classical jazz instrument. The Garden Tokyo presents the project “Avatar Robot Café,” a social project in which a robot assists people with limited mobility. The Garden Amsterdam – Waag presents “Robots are people too,” a foretaste of the exploration of collaborative robotics in the VOJEXT project. The Sock-o-Mat 3000 relieves sleepy elementary school children of the most tedious chore in the morning: putting on socks. This is a collaborative effort by brothers Rocco (age 6) and Cosmo (age 9).
As a highlight of this year’s performance program, renowned artist Maki Namekawa performs several pieces by György Ligeti and Hania Rani.
Prix Ars Electronica Inspirations

Since its inception in 1987, Prix Ars Electronica has always acted as a barometer of trends and a platform for bringing together current and future images of “Art, Technology, and Society” projected by artists. This year, more than a year after a pandemic broke out across the world, what trends and tendencies were seen in the award-winning works? What evaluation criteria did the Jury focus on this year?
