The audio work “Durch den Wind” (Through the Wind) deals with the topic of caring for people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. This care work is often taken over by relatives, who face enormous challenges as a result of this task. In her project, multimedia artist Jasmin Schlögl lets her 70-year-old grandmother Maria Schlögl recount her experiences when, at the age of 36, she devoted herself to caring for her dementia-stricken father-in-law.
How he climbed out of the window one night and was convinced he had been locked in the neighbor’s barn. How he developed more and more idiosyncrasies after being diagnosed with dementia – from initially harmless to increasingly aggressive. How he suffered a stroke and was confined to a wheelchair from that point on. Maria Schlögl had no support in the care work, which involved both physical exertion and mental stress. After her father-in-law died, the demanding time resonated with her for a long time, the memory remained.
Durch den Wind was awarded Young Professionals Honorary Mention in the u19-create your world category at the Prix Ars Electronica 2021.
