From 8-12 September 2021, the Ars Electronica Festival 2021 will once again take place in a hybrid format consisting of online and onsite events in Linz and other nearly 100 venues worldwide. The program is made up of numerous exhibitions, concerts, talks, conferences, workshops, and guided tours. We follow the advice to stay home, stay safe and continue to advise against traveling from abroad. Due to measures to contain the Covid 19 virus, the local audiences in Austria will be able to attend events in different Linz, Austria, such as the Kepler Gardens on the JKU campus, the Ars Electronica Center, OK in the OÖ Kulturquartier, as well as the Linz Art University. Museums, universities, labs, and galleries around the globe will join in with their online content via streams and social media. Everyone else can experience the international gardens from home and or join the events of our partners in their immediate vicinity.

Festival in Linz

Following official requirements, the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz will again take measures to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and any associated health risks. Details will be announced in the course of the summer of 2021. However, we request all international guests not to travel to Linz, Austria, and enjoy the festival program online, or to visit festival locations in their close vicinity! All venues in Linz are subject to the respective SARS-CoV-2 regulations (see location overview). Please bring a 3G proof (vaccinated, tested, recovered) with you to show upon entering the respective festival venues. Without the 3G proof, you cannot be granted access to the venues, even if you have already purchased a paid ticket! A festival visit is only possible for people who bring 3G proof. Please bring either proof of vaccination, an officially valid negative test result, or recovery confirmation after contracting COVID-19. Please take advantage of the numerous testing centres offered by the city of Linz. Please also bring mouth-nose protection with you.

  • VACCINATED: If you have already been vaccinated and received your first vaccine dose more than 21 days before, you can attend the festival without an additional test. Please present either a vaccination certificate or your vaccination card at the entrance to the festival. Vaccination is valid only after complete immunization. Proof is issued from the day of the 2nd vaccination. Vaccines where only one vaccination is provided (e.g. from Johnson & Johnson) are valid from the 22nd day after vaccination for a total of 270 days from the day of vaccination.
  • TESTED: Please take advantage of the many testing centres offered by the City of Linz. For more information on testing and how to make an appointment for a test, please visit ooe.oesterreich-testet.at or apotheken.oesterreich-testet.at or call 0800 220 330. The following tests are allowed and valid: PCR test (Not older than 72 hours), Authorized antigen test (Not older than 48 hours – free in pharmacies or test centers), Authorized self-test (Not older than 24 hours – Self-tests must be recorded in the official data processing system. This requires registration at selbsttest.ooe.gv.at. Private self-tests without this registration, without official recording, and without corresponding confirmation may not be recognised. For children over the age of 10, school tests also count as entry tests. For children under the age of 10, no entry test is required.
  • RECOVERED: If you have already contracted COVID-19 and have recovered, you are exempt from testing for six months from the date of recovery. To attend the festival, please bring appropriate proof, such as a recovery certificate or medical confirmation of molecularly confirmed infection. Proof of neutralizing antibodies is valid for three months from the date of testing.
3G proofs must be shown at the entrances of the festival location. Please have your proof ready.

Please visit our ticket page at https://ars.electronica.art/newdigitaldeal/en/tickets/. For the festival location Kepler’s Gardens at the JKU Campus please book your ticket online in advance – for all other festival locations ticket sales will take place on site.

Since all of the Ars Electronica Festival venues have limited capacity this year, access can only be guaranteed with a valid ticket purchased in advance. For nearly all events, you’ll need to register online in advance and print out a voucher.

It is not possible to pass on festival tickets, as every visitor to an event in Linz must register online in advance. Please carry a proof of identity with you.

The 2021 Ars Electronica Festival will be held at several venues in Linz, Austria: Kepler’s Gardens on the campus of Johannes Kepler University (JKU), the Ars Electronica Center, the Ars Electronica Futurelab, the OK in the OÖ Kulturquartier, the Kunstuniversität Linz and the Atelierhaus Salzamt. (Address and Opening Hours) Once again, the spacious parks and large buildings on the campus of Johannes Kepler University Linz will be the perfect setting for Ars Electronica events, be them artistic performances and concerts, lectures and conferences, and, of course, exhibitions and guided tours (WE GUIDE YOU). The green area on the outskirts of the city will once again host „create your world“ – an inspiring and Corona-proof playground for children and parents who love to experiment. To visit an event or exhibition at the Kepler’s Gardens, you must purchase a ticket in advance. (Buy Ticket).

(Address and Opening Hours) Of course, the Ars Electronica Center will again be open to visitors with its major exhibition on artificial intelligence, two other new exhibitions, and the visual treats of Deep Space 8K. A visit to the Ars Electronica Center is only possible by presenting a valid ticket and registering for the event at the same time. Tickets can only be purchased online (Buy ticket).

(Address and Opening Hours): The Ars Electronica Futurelab presents its own special program on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.

(Address and Opening Hours): In Linz’s city center, OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH is staging the CyberArts show in the OK in the OÖ Kulturquartier, presenting a selection of the year’s best media artworks selected by an international jury in the context of the Prix Ars Electronica 2021. In addition to outstanding computer animations, this time, the exhibition focuses on “Artificial Intelligence & Life Art” and “Digital Musics & Sound Art”. Admission to the OK in OÖ Kulturquartier is possible during opening hours and is subject to visitor capacity. No time slots are offered.

(Address and Opening Hours): In addition to the traditional exhibition of „Interface Cultures“, the Linz University of Art and Design is presenting a large show in partnership with various other international universities. Admission to the Linz University of Art and Design is free. Registration is mandatory and possible both in advance and on-site. Registration in advance is recommended.

Guided tours of the various festival locations for the local public are included in this year’s offer. The Spotlight Tour, for example, takes you through all areas of the exhibitions in Kepler’s Gardens. A tour through an exciting selection of artworks full of details and background knowledge – a great view awaits you from the roof of the library. Highlight and Family Tours guide you and your family through the Ars Electronica Center. The “Alchemists of the Future” tour, on the other hand, takes you on a journey through visions and ideas from the Ars Electronica Futurelab. create your world is an integral part of the Ars Electronica Festival this year as well. You can book tickets in advance. As usual, the program is aimed at children and youth and will also include guided tours.

Unfortunately, Ars Electronica Festival 2021 does not offer group tickets. To ensure the required minimum distance is respected, group-like gatherings are not permitted, except for groups of people from the same household.

Both the Ars Electronica Center and other festival venues in downtown Linz are largely barrier-free. However, since Ars Electronica also frequently uses unusual venues, i.e. venues designed for completely different purposes, it can occasionally happen that exhibition spaces are not accessible without barriers. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your understanding!

Unfortunately, dogs and other pets are not allowed in the Ars Electronica Festival venues.

We urge all international guests not to travel to Linz and enjoy the Ars Electronica Festival program online or visit local Ars Electronica Gardens in their vicinity. For those based in Austria, ÖBB, Westbahn or regional bus connections (OÖVV) will comfortably bring you to Linz. Please note that you must wear mouth and nose protection when using public transportation.

Yes, in order to take advantage of the full digital offerings of the Ars Electronica Festival 2021, you will need an online ticket, which you can purchase in our online shop.

Make sure your internet connection is stable and activated! Make sure the sound output of your device is on! The Ars Electronica Festival’s online program includes various presentation formats, some of which can be received on a variety of devices. To participate via computer/laptop, please determine before purchasing the ticket whether the main memory and graphics card of your device corresponds to the current standard to ensure high-quality image and sound. To participate in interactive formats of the festival program (workshops/conferences), which are presented via the provider zoom.us, you need to allow access to the external or the device camera and microphone! Before purchasing tickets, please make sure that your private devices meet the technical requirements for good quality and barrier-free experience of the online festival!

The online offerings of the 2021 Ars Electronica Festival can be accessed via the Swapcard online platform after purchasing an online ticket. Our online festival platform is an ideal place for networking and matchmaking. An intelligent algorithm links similar profiles and suggests potential matches based on the information provided. You can decide whether you want to respond to these suggestions and connect with attendees. The more information you add to your profile, the more accurate the suggestions will be. This is a great option for those who want to get in touch with other people from this year’s online festival community.
