Creative collaboration between scientific institutions, Ars Electronica and cultural partners throughout Europe is the credo of the European ARTificial Intelligence Lab. This is guaranteed by the large network of partners who pick up on and address visions, expectations and fears surrounding the topic of Artificial Intelligence and make them accessible in a variety of formats.

Laboral: Algorithmic Democracy

The relationship between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and political participation, which seemed distant, is now a reality. In recent years we have seen how these technologies have managed to cause changes in the electoral results of several countries and manipulate the perception we have of one political option or another. AI, capable of controlling and analyzing countless data to know our preferences, has acquired an alarming level of influence in democratic decisions, becoming an indispensable tool for any candidate aspiring to govern. But, can Artificial Intelligence help us to think about how and not about who? Is it possible to design other spaces for democratic participation and sovereignty in a society crossed by technology? Through these activities Laboral will analyze, together with artists, philosophers, journalists and activists, the role of artificial intelligence in the political sphere and the possibilities and challenges that this technology poses.

GLUON: SECRETS. Artificial Intelligence and Luc Tuymans

What is the relationship between art and artificial intelligence (AI)? Can AI become a tool for the contemporary artist? Does AI look at a painting the same way we do? BOZAR LAB and Gluon brought together AI expert Luc Steels (founder Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, VUB) and world-renowned Belgian painter Luc Tuymans to investigate these questions, in the form of a “scientist in residency” programme (2019-2021). The exhibition SECRETS presents this ongoing research.

Ars Electronica: Sarah Petkus (US) & Mark J Koch (US), Moon Rabbit
Residency, since February 2021

The third residency, whose current motto is “Astronomy x AI,” is led and organized by Ars Electronica in collaboration with Leiden Observatory. The winners of this residency have now been announced: Sarah Petkus (US) and Mark J. Koch (US) from Las Vegas will work on their Moon Rabbit project during a residency at the Leiden Observatory and the Ars Electronica Futurelab in Linz.

LABoral: When the butterflies of the soul flutter their wings. Art, neuroscience and artificial intelligence.

What potential can be found in art works that use neurotechnology, robotics or artificial intelligence? What can be evoked by art in relation to changing perceptions surrounding our understanding of the brain and the mind? What does art contribute to perception, thought, the emotions and multiple human and artificial intelligences? Through art, this exhibition aims to explore some of the expectations and questions raised by neuroscience and artificial intelligence.

FZC - FUNDACIÓN ZARAGOZA CIUDAD DEL CONOCIMIENTO: VisionarIAs

This exhibition seeks to explore the concepts of vision and visuality in relation to the creativity of machines and their impact on artistic creation. The pieces question the gaze, the vision of machines and the difference with the human vision when creating or recreating a worldview. Observe how AI and human creativity interact and make the artistic context evolve, challenging our link with machines from different perspectives to establish new modalities of relationship beyond the utilitarian.
