In order to deepen the discussion about what the future of our society might look like under changing conditions, the Ars Electronica Futurelab opens its doors every year during the Ars Electronica Festival and invites interested visitors to become acquainted with its latest research results and collaborations at the boundary between art, technology and society: In 2020, the interactive format Open Futurelab presented for the first time not only physical exhibitions and lectures on-site in Linz, but also a wide variety of experimental projects online and was thus induced by the pandemic unceremoniously converted into a hybrid format.

In addition to its diverse Key Research Topics and the selected projects of the Ideas Expedition 2020 – whose scientific approaches all combine an artistic approach with a wide variety of aspects from the field of cutting-edge technology – the Ars Electronica Futurelab presented, among all other innovations, Space Ink, an excerpt from the research collaboration Future Ink with pen and tablet developer Wacom that aims to make our world a more creative place; as well as Cascadea project developed in collaboration with Japanese broadcaster NHK that demonstrates the possibilities inherent in 8K technology in conjunction with vertical screens.

Whether in the context of Creative Question Challenges (CQC), virtual worlds or social telepresence, as viable forms of communication for the futureOpen Futurelab 2020 provided visitors a diverse range of possibilities for participation. In this retrospective, we have highlighted the best moments for you.
