Tribute to Philip – An evening of piano music composed by Philip Glass for Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa. Live from Deep Space 8K at the Ars Electronica Center in Linz with real-time digital visualizations by Cori O’Lan.

MON 31.1. is the 85th birthday of Philip Glass, one of the most important composers of our time. In Philip Glass’ successful career and extensive oeuvre, one name keeps cropping up that has helped shape the music world here in Europe: Dennis Russell Davies, as conductor of many European orchestras, including here in Austria, the RSO in Vienna and the Bruckner Orchestra in Linz, and currently as principal conductor in Brno and Leipzig.

The friendship and collaboration of Dennis Russell Davies and Philip Glass goes way back to their youth in New York, and Dennis became one of the important interpreters of Philip Glass’ music. No other conductor has premiered as many works by Philip Glass as he has, and as a pianist Dennis Russell Davies also has close ties to the work of Philip Glass, composing the first six Etudes for Piano for his friend in 1994.

Maki Namekawa is the most distinguished interpreter of Philip Glass’s piano works. In 2014, she performed the first complete recording of the 20 Etudes for Piano, which she was also the first to perform in full length in concert. In 2018 she was highly successful with the piano version of the film score Mishima and in 2019 Philip Glass wrote his Piano Sonata for Maki Namekwa, which will be performed in this concert.

Philip Glass also composed for piano duo Maki Namekawa and Dennis Russell Davies, and the Four Movements for Two Pianos from 2008 will form the brilliant conclusion of the concert.

The concert on MON 31.1. takes place in cooperation with the Klavierfestival Ruhr (Klavierfestival Ruhr commissioned the composition of Four Movements and together with Ars Electronica and Philharmonie de Paris also commissioned the Piano Sonata).
