Miso, soy sauce, sake, and koji are fermented foods that are indispensable to the Japanese diet. Hiraku Ogura is a fermentation designer who aims to make the microorganisms visible through design. In collaboration with brewers and researchers across Japan, he has developed a few projects on the theme of fermentation and microorganisms, including product development, production of picture books and animated films and workshops.

The central element of the kinetic sound sculpture is a dome overgrown with moss, its movement driven by readings of nitrogen oxide concentrations at various locations on our planet. Moss is regarded as a bio-indicator of air pollution, and this forms Barotti’s first collaboration with a living organism.

Technology mediates our relations to the biosphere, codifies and shapes them. They can constitute a means of both care and control. This international program brings together artists, scientists, scholars and the general public for inspiring presentations and conversations. The LEONARDO LASER LINZ, hosted by the Interface Cultures department at the University of Art and Design Linz, will be held during the Ars Electronica 2021 Festival.
