Origin
Refik Anadol (TR/US)

Origin is an immersive installation that narrates the incredible cultural and scientific legacy of Ars Electronica. Using archival information from the past 40 years, this piece aims to tell the story not only the story of the institutions’ foresight and innovation but also use this history to visualize future trends and realities.

De toujours tu seras l'antépénultième peril
Kévin Ardito (FR)

This sculptural and musical installation diffuses cover versions of Billy Joel’s song Honesty. It uses digital and robotic media to question our relationship with transparency and lies in an entertaining and mischievous way: skull-shaped robots singing a song about honesty. The recorded voices lend some warmth to the robotic coldness of the artwork by adding an organic element to the robots, blurring assessments of identity or the reasons for their presence. The background simulates an Aurora Borealis, which is reflected on the skulls and the surrounding environment.

Modell 5
Granular Synthesis – Kurt Hentschlaeger (AT), Ulf Langheinrich (DE)

MODELL 5 is a performance or installation in which the face of Japanese performer Akemi Takeya is subject to drastic time-based interventions that create in essence a cyborg-like hybrid, between human and machine. A roller coaster dramaturgy following the “life” of the four clones on screens.

data.tron
Ryoji Ikeda (JP)

How many points are there in a line? What is the number of numbers? How can we verify that the random is random? data.tron is part of the datamatics project, a series of experiments that explore such questions both physically and mathematically. Visitors will experience the vast universe of data in the infinite between 0 and 1. data.tron is an audiovisual installation in which each single pixel of visual image is strictly calculated by mathematical principle, composed of a combination of pure mathematics and the vast sea of data present in the world. These images are projected onto a large screen, heightening and intensifying the visitor’s perception and total immersion in the work.

Listening capsules (light version)
Thomas Barbé (FR), the Random(lab)

Our body is a tactile receiver of all musical waves: we perceive them through our skin, muscles, nerves, bones, etc. The listening capsules immerse the viewer in “somesthetic” compositions generated live by an algorithm. The intention is to take the listener out of his usual sound environment in order to invite him to renew his listening experience. These waves, sinusoidal frequencies, are composed and synthesized generatively by a software specifically developed for the installation, the sinoto.

Meandering River
onformative (DE), kling klang klong (DE)

Meandering River is an audiovisual art installation comprised of real-time visuals and music composed by an A.I. through machine learning. The piece reinterprets the shifting behavior of rivers in the landscape, regarded from a bird’s eye view. Minor changes of riverbeds are not visible for the bare eye, as they are gradually happening over time. Spanning over multiple screens Meandering River visualizes these altering landscapes and makes the changes visible. It leaves the observer with a unique perception of time.

It started with Cassette Culture!
Wolfgang Dorninger (AT)

At this year's Ars Electronica Festival, Wolfgang Dorninger will setup a sound installation based on tape loops, self-soldered autogenerative music machines, synthetic bird sounds and algorithmic sound creations which will be amplified with tactile speakers, horns and subwoofers to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ars Electronica.

Overloading / Overloaded: Touch Me Softly
Yve Oh (CN)

The Ars Electronica Center itself is being expanded to include touch-sensitive sensors which will be transformed into an interactive installation. Several sensor-points placed on different positions on the façade invite visitors to touch, caress, scratch, strike and hit the building. Touch, in turn, creates wave animations that spread across the building. Overloading the sensors (eg. hard knocking) causes the whole façade to crash.

SELLOUT
Onur Olgaç (TR)

SELLOUT is a real-time game for two players. It is designed around the concept and dynamics of the Prisoner’s Dilemma. Whether the players will cooperate with each other or sell the other one out is the core mechanic behind each round.

Journey on the Tongue
Ayako Suwa (JP), Evala (JP), Yasuaki Kakehi (JP)

Journey on the Tongue is a totally new taste and sound installation which invites you on a spectacular multi-sensory journey. Realized by the three artists Ayako Suwa, the pursuer of "Expressive food," sound artist Evala, the founder of “See by Your Ears,” and media artist Yasuaki Kakehi, who explores new haptic experiences. This work is a new perception of sound and taste.
