I had a childhood memory of waking up in the middle of sleep and found myself sitting outside the house. It felt like everything was displaced. My grandmother was woken up by my crying and came out to take me home.
In Gray Room, I use the 3D scan model to visualize my late grandmother’s house as a method to explore the relationship between architectural space and body, and to examine my perception of memory and death from a material perspective.
Che-yu Hsu (TW)
Che-yu Hsu participated in the residency program at HISK (2019–2020) and Le Fresnoy (2020–2022). In 2022, he began his two-year residency program at Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. What matters to the artist is not simply the history of events traceable through media, but also the construction and visualization of memories, be they private or collective.

Wan-Yin Chen is a PhD candidate in modern and contemporary art history at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research project focuses on contemporary media art practices from East Asia and how colonial past and folklore traditions have informed the manifestations of artists in artworks.
