Winning Project: AI Bias Unmasked by Dimension Plus

The Winner of the Art Thinking Workshop

After an extensive selection process involving an open call, an intense training week with another 11 projects, and a committed jury session, we are thrilled to announce that the winner of the TAICCA X Ars Electronica Art Thinking Program 2024 is Dimension Plus. Their proposal aims to confront and unveil the hidden biases inherent within artificial intelligence.

Dimension Plus will develop an immersive installation that challenges the viewer to confront the biases ingrained within AI algorithms. Their concept delves into the complexities of how AI perceives and categorizes objects, with a captivating entry point: the Taiwanese delicacy called Pig Blood Cake. This seemingly innocuous food item serves as a poignant example of how AI can misrepresent cultural artifacts.

Through their installation, Dimension Plus seeks to not only raise awareness of AI biases but also empower participants to actively engage in the process of data creation. By involving the audience in the construction of a new dataset, they aim to democratize the ownership of AI technologies, fostering a more inclusive and equitable approach to AI development.

The winning project of Dimension Plus was also awarded the prestigious Technology Innovation Award from the Quanta Research Institute. That means they’re getting top-notch consulting services and technical support from the Quanta-NYCU Joint AI Research Center. A first version of the installation will be presented at the Ars Electronica Festival from September 4-8.
