From Auckland to Johannesburg to Los Angeles, from Bergen to Antarctica, universities, museums, galleries, clubs, communities and businesses in 120 locations around the globe host hundreds of exhibitions, conferences, performances, concerts and workshops aimed at local audiences – Stay Home, Stay Safe! Ars Electronica, in turn, uses these events to form a festival on the Net that makes all these local activities and perspectives accessible to an international community.

The Ars Electronica Festival in Linz
With the Ars Electronica Center and the University of Art and Design Linz, the first two venues will be launching their programs on Wednesday, September 9, 2020. The OKs CyberArts exhibition at the OÖ Kulturquartier will open on Thursday, September 10, 2020. The Kepler’s Garden on the JKU campus Linz will be open from Friday, September 11 (from 1:00 PM) to Sunday, September 13, 3 PM – Please don’t forget to buy a ticket online BEFORE your visit!

The Art University Linz opens its doors and invites you to the “WILD STATE”. The focus is on young media art from Linz, while artistic-technological projects from partner universities and the SOUND CAMPUS will also be on display with live performances and a virtual sound art exhibition. In the evening, the building façade on the main square of Linz will become a huge projection screen for audiovisual, interactive projects. At the Ars Electronica Center, visitors can expect exciting and inspiring excursions into the future-oriented fields of artificial intelligence, neuroscience, robotics and autonomous mobility as well as genetic engineering and biotechnology. Art history at its finest is on the agenda at Deep Space 8K.

At the OK in the Upper Austrian Kulturquartier the CyberArts Exhibition opens and shows the best media art of the year. The focus is on artistic projects submitted to the Prix Ars Electronica in the COMPUTER ANIMATION, INTERACTIVE ART + and DIGITAL COMMUNITIES categories. The equally visionary and feminist art pioneer VALIE EXPORT will also be a focal point.

From 1 pm “Kepler’s Garden” welcomes its guests for the first time at the beautiful campus of JKU. Between old trees and newly planted perennials, the tranquil duck pond and striking modern architecture, artistic and scientific projects focus on our interaction with nature. STARTS and as part of an exhibition developed especially for the festival, the Linz Institute of Technology (LIT) will showcase elaborate engineering art from Linz, while the STARTS exhibition will present groundbreaking collaborations between science, technology and art. The evening is then dedicated to the Big Concert Night. The Bruckner Orchestra Linz conducted by Markus Poschner will play Beethoven’s great liberation opera Fidelio, Maria Hofstätter and Karl Markovics will read from the correspondence of the resistance fighter Franz Jägerstätter and his wife Franzsika.

In Deep Space 8K art historian Till-Holger Borchert explains Jan van Eyck’s world-famous Ghent Altar. On the JKU campus, the children’s and youth festival CREATE YOUR WORLD invites visitors to a “garden of talents”. Ars Electronica’s infotrainers invite you to take guided tours through the inspiring thicket in “Kepler’s Garden“. At the same time, the “AI x Music Festival” will be launched, which uses music as an example to explore the interaction between humans and intelligent machines.

The crowning finale of Ars Electronica 2020 will see classical piano music and real-time visualizations come together at “Pianographique“: Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa will perform Ludwig van Beethoven, Philip Glass, John Cage and Kurt Schwertsik. The visuals, which react to the music in real time, are by Cori O’Lan and Gregor Woschitz.
