Performances of newly commissioned works in 2021
For the Digital Indaba 21, NewMusicSA commissioned three South African composers. These new works were premiered monthly in a concert series in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Panda Rhei is a new commission for violin and electronics composed by Dimitri Voudouris and performed by Waldo Alexander on violin and Voudouris himself on electronics at the Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre (Johannesburg, ZA) on Sunday 7 March 2021. Cool as the Shade is my Soul. Five Faces with Masks for Clarinet and Percussion os a new commission for percussion and clarinet composed by Hannes Taljaard and performed by Magdalena de Vries (percussion) and Morné van Heerden (clarinet) at the Kalashnikovv Gallery (Johannesburg, ZA) on Sunday 4 April 2021. Lomhlaba, unjani uma unje is a new commission for voice and piano trio composed by Neo Muyanga inspired by the lives of Ludwig van Beethoven and Joseph Shabalala, performed by Lungiswa Plaatjies (voice), Matthijs van Dijk (violin), Graham du Plessis (cello) and David Lubbe (piano) at Yougblood Gallery (Cape Town, ZA) on Saturday 8 May 2021.
