We have to admit that a visit to the Ars Electronica Festival comes with a bit of chaos. But in this seemingly unmanageable range of programs-whether online or on-site-there are always chance encounters, with people and topics that initially lie outside one’s own “bubble of interest” but then broaden one’s horizons. Microbes Performing in Zoom

There is not only a decline in linguistic and phonetic diversity but also in the diversity of the microbiomes. Both the monopolisation of languages and the spatial distancing in digital communication exacerbate this decline. Spiess&Strecker’s performance counteracts the simultaneous decline of microbial and linguistic diversity by presenting a vision of language as an ecological process.

The Werkleitz Festival 2021 move to… sociosphere ecosphere bodydatasphere is a correspondence location of the 2021 Ars Electronica. During the past 4 years, the artists and collectives at 11 institutions of the European Media Art Platform have been researching the most urgent challenges of our age. The virtual closing exhibition will feature 44 works produced with the support of Creative Europe.

The Art Thinking Forum is a platform created jointly by Ars Electronica and Hakuhodo to discuss and exchange ideas on how to utilize art for a better society. Algaphon

Algaphon is a hybrid installation where algae bubbles that ring at Minnaert frequency near algal filaments are rendered audible through a hydrophone. Online visitors can leave a voice message that is translated into photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) variations in a remote aquarium. The response of the algae bubble response to human speech is then recorded and sent back to the visitor to engage in a reflective dialog with algal species.

Uncanny Dream: Artist-talks with exhibition participants

Gray Cake (Kate Pryanik, Sasha Serechenko) (RU) the “Dreams of the Machine” artists work with the phenomenon of AI and, starting from the concept of human consciousness, they ask the question of the existence of “algorithmic unconscious”. Mitry Grankov – “Art translator”. Using the phone camera, the translator is asked to “translate” real works of art from museum collections into different languages.

Commissioned and developed by York Mediale, Absent Sitter is a digitally abstracted live alternative to touring, created by experimental musician, composer and performer, Gazelle Twin, immersive creative collective, KMA and sound artist Ben Eyes with the University of York Music Department. The artwork explores the power of ‘collective imagination’ within an audience and the importance of ‘presence/absence’ in a live event.

Innovation & Collaboration between Koc University, UPC and UCA

Promoting innovation and creative thinking processes among the young generations is a key mission of ESPRONCEDA Institute of Art & Culture. This year, in the context of IMMENSIVA, we started to create a collaboration with students of very prestigious creative/ tech universities: CITM-UPC, in Barcelona and Karma Lab/Koc University in Istanbul, under the mentorship of UCA.

Contemporary artists, designers and inventors are creating new connections and systems, exploring how silicon, organic and even speculatively alien forms of life are entangling, mutating, evolving. What can these new entities and relationships look like? Are they friendships and collaboration, or competitions and conflict? For these new exchanges we need new languages: programmable, aesthetic, interspecies, non-human and post-scientific. The emerging hybrid and cyborg entities join and celebrate shamanistic and nonverbal traditions, hidden cultures, with magical symbols, energies and fictions. A culture or even a cult of symbiosis is required, a fusion between old and new ways of dealing with reality.

Sound of Taiwan: Today’s creations become tomorrow’s cultural assets! Diverse styles showcase Taiwanese creativity. The Sound of Taiwan concert was a world premiere of two locally made compositions: Gordon Chin’s Piano Concerto No.1 and Nan-Chang Chien’s Symphony No. 4. The two compositions were debuted with: conductors Günther Herbig and Wen-Pin Chien and performed by pianist Chia-Hui Lu along-side the NSO. The concert is a milestone achievement in the continued development of Taiwan culture.
