Artificial Intelligence and citizen science both aim to tackle large, complex data challenges—AI through advanced algorithms, and citizen science through the collective efforts of non-experts applying human intelligence. As AI increasingly supports or mimics human decision-making, interest is growing in how it can boost citizen science—and how citizen participation can shape AI in return. Yet challenges remain: Citizen science projects often struggle with data quality and must navigate strict GDPR rules when handling personal information, balancing open access with legal and ethical responsibilities.

The challenges of AI technologies in relation to citizen science projects are multifaceted. In this panel conversation, experts will focus on and discuss ethical and legal aspects based on practical examples, faced challenges, and applied methodologies.
