A long copper sheet floats gently at the center of the room. Reflections from spotlights overhead wash the walls in a desert-red dusk. Beneath the metal plate, four contact microphones have been placed to capture every subtle trace on the metal surface.
During the five days of celebration, two humans enter the room each day to perform a ritual for festival visitors. As the audience gathers around the installation, one begins drawing a line of gunpowder on the copper surface, while the other prepares to ignite it. A flame follows the line through space as the drawer completes its path. Sparks dance, and the room is bathed in a rumbling red glow. In no more than five breaths, the carnivalesque fire fades. The heated metal slowly shifts from a shimmering distortion back to a flat plane, while the sizzling minerals left by the flame cool down crystallizing into sound.
