Young filmmakers, young talents, young professionals are asked to film mini-documentaries that capture their perspectives and impressions of the festival’s themes. Instead of one general documentation of the festival, eight short stories will be produced, including different slots and protagonists.

Despite the widely embraced opinion that involving artists and creatives in innovation processes contributes to better results, very few research and development platforms are employing artists or art thinking in their innovation teams. Die talk's participants will discuss the challenges for artists, scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs stemming from essentially non-existing collaborative/open innovations.

Young Animations

Every year young gifted filmmakers submit their weird, subtle, witty, utopian, critical and dystopian works for the Prix Ars Electronica’s category of “u19—create your world”, for the mb21 and the c<19 (HU). They show us their strong imagination, their deep understanding of certain topics, and all expressed with their abilities within one media.

Vast amounts of pictures, sounds, videos and 3D scans are organized as environments in Rebecca Merlic’s The City as a House, in form of an interactive visual novel. A work about the experiment of a white European 30-year-old heterosexual human living in Tokyo without inhabiting a private apartment over a period of time. A speculative exploration of the possibilities of abolishing known forms of habitation.

Expanded Animation Symposium at UCA

The symposium Synaesthetic Syntax examines the interactions between animation and audio from a scientific perspective. Researchers and artists were asked to submit contributions on the subject of Synaesthetic Syntax: Sounding Animation/Visualising Audio. This scientific/artistic survey is kicked off by the media artist Rose Bond, who offers insights into her artistic work in public spaces, followed by panel discussions on the topics of "Hearing Color Seeing Sound", "In Front of Your Eyes and Ears", and "The Kinaesthetics of Music and Vision".

Since 1987, the Electronic Theatre has compiled a large number of submissions from all over the world, providing an up-to-the-minute survey of animation art in the context of technology and society. It impressively illustrates the dynamic development of artistic computer animation over the past three decades as well as the expansive growth of various fringe areas. A glance at the works selected this year shows a broad range, from animation in the context of performance and installations to real-time animation and multifaceted, subject-based discussions.

In collaboration with the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences’ Hagenberg Campus, the 8th Expanded Animation symposium carries on a process launched in 2013: to map the wide-ranging domain of animated worlds of imagery beyond well-trodden paths. The symposium stays the course originally set at its inception, and presents theoretical positions and perspectives from the art world, the R&D field and the industrial sector.

Movement and landscape in flux, five figures wander across the landscape of Central Otago. Between the rocks and crevices, they move. In this moving image installation, we explore our persistent longing for belonging in an age of virtual travel. Filmed in the raw physical landscapes of Central Otago and the Motion Capture Studio of CoLab AUT in Auckland, we map between radically different scapes.
