We are living in the midst of a dramatic transformation of everyday life and society brought about by the digital revolution – producing vast amounts of data. Data science and data scientists are becoming increasingly important. The Ars Electronica Futurelab, in collaboration with Toyota Coniq Alpha in Japan, envision Data Art & Science, a new interdisciplinary field incorporating artistic perspectives for future transformation based on data science.

In this project, we collaborate with artists and data scientists to prototype projects that embody Data Art & Science using the Ars Electronica Center’s immersive environment, Deep Space 8K. Through this process, we will research a curriculum for learning in this area. Based on the results of this research, we plan to design an educational program in collaboration with universities that have a data science faculty, and conduct a demonstration experiment. By creating such next-generation experts, we hope to solve the problems facing Japan and the world and promote change toward a better future society.

Akiko Nakayama (JP)
Akiko Nakayama (b. in 1988) is a painter who depicts the beauty of conveying energy metamorphosis through several media such as installation, videos, and performance. She brings painting to life by combining the energy of movement and the vibrance of colors. This she cals *Alive Painting*. She depicts the resonance between shapes and textures using different types of liquids, each with a unique characteristic. Various mediums and colors are blended, and the works that change are like improvisational poetry. Quadrature, (DE)
Quadrature’s artistic research focuses on data and physical experiments. The Berlin based artist duo understands technology as a means to read and write realities. Together they pursue a transdisciplinary approach, using various media such as time-based performance and installation as well as classical sculptural and two-dimensional works. For some years, the members Juliane Götz, Sebastian Neitsch and formerly Jan Bernstein (until 2016), have won several awards and scholarships for their artistic practice, including recognition by the Prix Ars Electronica in 2015 and 2018, scholarships from the Kunstfonds Bonn, Akademie Schloss Solitude and LaBecque, as well as a fellowship from PODIUM Esslingen and the Hertz-lab of the ZKM Karlsruhe (Centre of Art and Media). Their works are shown around the world in various festivals and exhibitions.
Akira Wakita (JP)
Akira Wakita creates works that update the way we see the world by visualizing/auralizing/materializing forces that exist in front of us but cannot be perceived. His works have been exhibited at Ars Electronica Center, RedBull Music Festival, Mutek, WRO Art Center, SIGGRAPH, Kiyoharu Art Colony, Japan Media Arts Festival, Miraikan, Any Tokyo, etc. He is a professor at the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, Keio University.
