24h Rave

A rave is a party, of course. But the social and political moment that makes up a rave is much more significant. Far from everyday normality, detached from any structures of rational action, the volume of the sounds takes over the mind, the vibration of the bass embraces the body from inside and outside. It is dark and narrow, or vast and free; you can scream, sweat, or just watch and be as you want. Since 2019, musicians and sound performers as well as event and club operators have been severely affected by the new rules of preventive “social” distance. In the digital space, not all seven senses can be stimulated, but we can share the sensitive experience in the audiovisual realm. During the Ars Electronica Festival, the 24h Rave provides a stage for international artists and invites the entire festival community to spend a common night and day around the planet overcoming social, political, and spatial boundaries through electronic music.

This performance focuses on the default staging of digital music, which most often includes someone sitting or standing behind a computer. This is especially true in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, when performers and audiences alike are relegated to screen-based interactions.

Hum of the Earth

A sound performance based on a joint project that arose from two elements: noise, and an anthropological interest in how people react to the spontaneous invasion by «unthinkable sound» of their private and hermetic sound reality. Every audible sound has its source, but what could we do with the sudden appearance of unfamiliar disturbing noises that persistently change everyday life towards total unrecognisability? The mythologeme of the «Hum of the Earth» interests artists as a vantage from which to interpret non-everyday noise and its contexts: from the subjective-affective to the mass-eschatological.

Absent Sitter

Commissioned and developed by York Mediale, Absent Sitter is a digitally abstracted live alternative to touring, created by experimental musician, composer and performer, Gazelle Twin, immersive creative collective, KMA and sound artist Ben Eyes with the University of York Music Department. The artwork explores the power of ‘collective imagination’ within an audience and the importance of ‘presence/absence’ in a live event.

Desert Bloom presents “on the tendencies of trauma & resilience”

Desert Bloom (CA) & Austin Tufts (CA)

Long-form arrangement from composer Desert Bloom consisting of three movements, “on the tendencies of trauma and resilience” blends classical form and experimental electronic instrumentation alongside drummer Austin Tufts’ live drum improvisations. Conceptually, this piece delves into reactions to traumas experienced by women of color, the lack of a societal discourse on the subject and the concept of resilience, widely used as a scapegoat to avoid providing further support or to genuinely confront our own biases and toxic behaviors.

Lost Interferences

We sometimes get desperate, we sometimes get lonely when we lose something. Through the participatory installation Lost Interferences we collect feelings on loss. Using a deep neural network algorithm, we share those feelings as sound information. In a collective action, Constantin Basica, from the location of the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics Stanford (CCRMA), with Romeo Cornelius and Maia Morgenstern, and Irina Margareta Nistro, will perform telematically.

The sound of ENTU

Emanuele Balia (IT)

The piece is a generative audio from the installation project ENTU Umanesimo Artificiale in its Garden Bologna/Fano. Data from the wind collected in Sardinia island in Italy is processed through algorithms that explore its timbral potential of the physical phenomenon. What you will se is the software interface during the live interaction by the artist, in the purest form of collaboration between man and machine.

The sound artist Stefan Tiefengraber is presenting his latest sound-performance project DOWM. Three walkmans, three effect pedals, two mixers, a mini-synthesizer, microphones and several feedback loops create a noise-scape that ends in silence and emptiness.

11:68PM (DE)

As a music producer and co-owner of his newly founded label “What If It Works” Berlin based artist 11:68PM explores the multiple synthesises of audio and visual expressions. In his DJ-set for ARS Electronica’s 24h Rave he steps up for a dedicated one hour journey through uptempo electronics and IDM – recorded in September 2021 at Brewery Studios in Berlin.

Warawar Kjaua – Chajnantor (extended)

The audio track is a collabora1on between Olaff Peña Pastene and Samuel Domínguez, presented as an extended version of Olaff’s original song Warawar Kjaua, which uses the Tihuanaco’s civilisa1on cosmovision to interpret ALMA Observatory’s data. This is entangled with a fake field recording created using ar1ficial intelligence and slight musical interpreta1ons created by Domínguez.

Pheek/Iregui present “INVERSION”

In the age of Instagram, polished profiles and overly-sanitized cleanliness, INVERSION instead attempts to show the levels of spontaneity, uncertainty and questioning underlying musical creation. Daniel Iregui’s enormous black mirror, placed behind Pheek and fitted with a device allowing it to vibrate to sound, allows spectators to experience the artists’ various states of mind during an unpredictable yet intuitive journey, where everything will become crystal-clear to those with the patience to wait.

What ties O-Wells‘ career together is a certain emotionality that gently addresses the listener from the side. This approach to music-making is naturally continued in his style of djing: Incorporating his personal history of producing ambient, breakbeat and house to fast-paced Detroit-influenced techno under his second moniker Frankfurt Bass, Lennard Poschmann draws from this rich pool to create his own musical language.

The AV performance [ˈdaːzaɪn] conceptually revolves around the detachment of communication and interaction from the human body into a virtual and digital space and the consequences this can have for us as physical and mental beings. A phenomenon that has obviously also been accelerated by the effects of the Covid19 pandemic.

Porto Porto is on a mission to bring music that collectively raises our human vibrations. The stresses of isolation melt away in hearing dreamy delays of the harp mixed with an up-tempo bass and beat line. Grounded by Milo Johnson’s bass lines, and reinforced melodically with his horn and string accompaniments, the team -featuring Alex Tibbitts, Quan, Samito and Boogieman- promises to transport the listener from rain forests and remote island villages to busy urban underground.

COOK.D is a French artist and music researcher at IRCAM who goes back and forth between techno and bass music. In this performance, she tries to explore the dimension where these two electronic genres coexist and offers you a set that is both percussive and melodic.

The limit between these concepts has been shaped through centuries of evolution, but nowadays, we are continuously enforcing the fronteer to the point it has become nothing more than a blurry delimitation. Each person has its own subjective fronteer where it start considering music as noise. This performance is a battle between music and noise that takes place within each one of us.

Mohsen Ataei AKA Moss is a veteran Iranian underground DJ, starting electronic music back in 2000. Collecting and playing music has been an obsession with Moss since his teenage years, eventually leading him to study Audio Engineering and Electronic music production at SAE Paris. In the late 2000s, he became a member and producer of the Parisian underground cult band “Big Daddy’s Dead” performing at most of the city’s prestigious clubs.

Farzan Badie (IR)

Farzan Badie is a DJ/music producer/audio engineer and radio host based in Tehran. He got his Diploma in Sound Engineering from the S.A.E Malaysia. Since then he has played in Iran, Germany, Hungary, Malaysia, Dubai, Cyprus and Turkey. He formed a DJ/Live act with British DJ Jules Dickens in Kuala Lumpur and worked in a public studio in Budapest for 2 years. Farzan is the co-founder and music director of “Beshknow”, an online radio and collective from Tehran.

ATP (FR/LR)

ATP spent his 20’s playing in various free parties and festival as part of the duo Frapading with his best bro Dezaks. Together they developed their signature sound, gathering influences from tribal freetekno, psytrance and electronic madness between piles of speakers and diesel emanations. Since then ATP has been pursuing his own sonic exploration from electronic to speedcore with a strong emphasis on heavy drum beats and screeching, psychedelic synth lines.

5 Episodes

Zak Argabrite (US)

5 Episodes is an audio-visual performance work which traces the lifecycles of electronic devices: from their origins as extracted land to their eventual deaths in sacrificed lands. The performance of 5 Episodes involves a collaboration between Zak and a collection of discarded electronic devices and media from second-hand sources such as electronic waste recycling centres.

Landing

Jessica Robinson (NZ)

Landing is a soundscape exploring additive, subtractive and FM synthesis, created in Supercollider. These techniques are used to generate atmospheric textures with varying degrees of familiarity, investigating the feeling of exploration.

forme cangianti

Fabio Morreale (IT)

forme cangianti is an audiovisual live-coding composition. Before the performance, hundreds of mathematical functions were coded to govern the behaviours of the sound (Supercollider) and the visuals (shaders). At performance time, the performer gradually summoned these dormant functions, who “live code” variables of these equations. This artwork is part of ongoing research aimed at developing a visual identity to computer-generated and experimental electronic music.

trialPressure

Liam Pram (NZ)

The work explores a number of sonic environments manipulated through a custom interface utilising hand controlled pressure sensors, foot controlled potentiometers, and reactive incandescent bulbs. All gestures used for control could be conceived of as exerting pressure on the mechanism, and so the sonic and visual environments are arranged to react in some manors which may represent such a relationship. The interface utilised a Bela, a K8064 DC Controlled Dimmer, and is coded in Pure Data.
