An hour of violence
Domestic Data Streamers (INT/ES)

In this workshop the creative team at Domestic Data Streamers will walk you through 8 invisible contemporary violences that have a great impact in our everyday lives. The team will talk about the conceptual research behind the project, how they’ve turned such complex information into an interactive exhibition and will end up with a live collective debate on meaningful questions around the topic.

Networked Bodies: Body, embodiment and New Media
Katerina Gnafaki

Body, embodiment and New Media gives insight into three Ars Electronica Festival projects that address the body in the digital sphere.

CyberArts 2021: Digital Musics & Sound Art

Music occupies the longest period of time in the history of computer creation. Starting in 1987 as the category for Computer Music, this category has changed in keeping with digital development. It now distinguishes contemporary digital sound production from the broad spectrum of electronically generated music, works combining sound, media and music, digital compositions ranging from electro-acoustic to experimental, and sound installations. There is a strong tendency in Computer Music towards immersive listening experiences and compositions that let the listener dive deep into imaginary soundscapes.

CyberArts 2021: Computer Animation

All animated images, however handcrafted, necessarily become digital at some stage of the production or distribution process, and thereby “computer animation.” The question in this category is therefore what kind of tool for communication they represent and which experiences they create for the viewer. The spectrum ranges here from abstract works, music videos, essay films, and character animations, to data visualizations and physical installations, all the way to virtual realities (VR, AR, and MR).

CyberArts 2021: Artificial Intelligence & Life Art

The new category Artificial Intelligence & Life Art is dedicated to artistic practice and thinking related with all areas of Artificial Intelligence and Life Sciences. Rewarded are artworks engaging critically and highly qualitative with Biotech, Genetic Engineering, Life Sciences as well as Robotic and Kinetic, Machine Learning, Deep Learning and any other form of Artificial Intelligence Research.

Our lives tracked – meaning, risks and remedies
Stefano Rossetti (IT)

The Internet is characterised by the large-scale collection of our personal data via hidden digital trackers such as cookies. The workshop will describe this system, its risks and how the law can be used to fight unfair use of technology.

AI x Music - The Question of Autonomy and Human Intention in Art & AI (Episode I)
Isabella Salas (MX/QC), Maya Indira Ganesh (IN/DE/UK), Yuri Suzuki (JP/UK), Ali Nikrang (AT)

In recent years, new AI technologies have increasingly been incorporated into fascinating artistic projects. The ability of AI to explore new, previously unknown perspectives of data certainly seems to enable new areas of artistic creation. But it also raises questions about possible forms of collaboration between AI and human artists. Intention plays a great role in the creative process. But how can artistic intention be communicated with an AI system? How does the degree of autonomy of an AI system affect human-AI collaboration? Are less autonomous AI systems better suited for artistic tasks because they give humans more freedom?

AI x Digital Humanism
$teven Ra$pa (US), Agnieszka Wykowska (IT), Rashin Fahandej (US), Agnieszka Pilat (US), Jillian York (US) , Martin Rauchbauer (AT)

As the driving factor of societal change, digitalization needs to be negotiated. However, in order for the “real work” to begin, a universal commitment to putting the social dimension at the core of technological development and digitalization is a key factor. Under the umbrella of Digital Humanism panelists come together to discuss how – through combining critical artistic engagement and collaboration across scientific disciplines – digital technologies can be shaped to serve as a means of strengthening and disseminating humanistic and social values.

AI x Feudalism: Digital serfdom in the world of Big Data, between property rights, empowerment, and content control
Sophie Zhang (US), Renata Ávila (GT), Frederike Kaltheuner (DE), Evgeny Morozov (BY/US)

From redemption and liberation to restriction, if not imprisonment, the same data sets can mean very different things to different people. Generally speaking: Data is power. But whose power are we talking about?

AI x Media Literacy: A Communication Problem?
Kyriaki Goni (GR), Meredith Broussard (US), Martina Mara (AT), Kanta Dihal (NL), Katrin-Cécile Ziegler (DE)

Artificial intelligence is a hot topic in the media. General interest and awareness regarding artificial intelligence (AI) has increased strongly. Therefore, media coverage of AI has become more and more prominent. But what image of AI is transmitted to the public through the media? What aspects do media focus on, what are the images transmitted? What are the possible effects on social perception of AI?
