Art and culture play an important role in bridging the gap between technology and society and contributing to technological innovation. The intercultural and intergenerational workshop program, a think-and-do-tank during the Ars Electronica Festival, invites students from the Festival University, artists, scientists, activists and festival audiences to meet with experienced professionals for mutual inspiration and exchange of ideas and know-how.

CoderDojo

CoderDojo Linz (AT)

The CoderDojo Linz is a free, volunteer-run club for children and young people aged eight to 17 who want to delve deeper into the world of technology. Supported by a team of mentors who are themselves involved in programming, children and young people can program their first computer games or even try their hand at creating a website.

Roots & Seeds XXI, Community Allelopathy

During our workshop we will be discussing the potential of future forms of allelopathy with participants. Local plants/seeds from a certified nursery will be given to each of them, as well as brining their own plants from home (or their photos, drawings, etc.) will be encouraged. With all this material, projections will be made (more or less viable or fantastic) about the influence of human culture in the creation of future plant communities.

Dive into plastic

Kat Austen (UK/DE) & Fara Peluso (IT)

In this workshop, artists Kat Austen and Fara Peluso will introduce participants to bioplastic as a new material. We will discuss the ways that bioplastic is different, and the ways it is similar, to plastic. Drawing inspiration from our everyday lives, we will look at the lifecycle of the materials we have around us and the impact they have on the environment, both in terms of what happens to them when we no longer need them, and how they are made.

Expanded Geoengineering

Tega Brain and Sam Lavigne will share their recent collaborative practice that explores the role of computation in response to the climate crisis. Calling their recent body of work Expanded Geoengineering, they challenge us to reconsider what counts as engineering, and they reframe climate change as being a problem of politics, media and culture.

Feminist Futures – Imagining Another Internet

Feminist Futures is an ongoing participatory art project that advocates for just and diverse futures of the Internet. In workshops, participants discuss the current issues of the Internet, and then re-imagine them through stories, comics, or poems. What results is an open-source archive of stories that provide strategies for change.

Ars Electronica Futurelab: Life Ink Demo

In the Life Ink exhibition, the Ars Electronica Futurelab presents wearable gear for the real-time visualization of brainwave and body signals as digital brush strokes, called Life Ink. The project explores the inner mechanism of creativity in our brain and body to develop a new form of ink. In the workshop some of the visitors can try out the gear, creating their own Life Ink. Life Ink is part of the lab’s Future Ink research project with Wacom, with Festival workshops and demonstrations.

Photosynthetic You

Workshop: Photosynthetic You explores fundamental ethical questions related to the renewed debate on genetics, reaching as far as the hypothesis of being able to exchange our human genes with those of other species using innovative systems such as CRISPR/Cas. What if we can all decide, paradoxically and in an extreme, mass democratic act, to become thin and motionless like leaves, energetically self-sufficient like plants, feeding only on light and solar power?

Mobility of the Future Workshop

Crafting Futures Lab “Oscillating Bodies” – Workshop

Piezoelectric crystals intra-act in mountains, laboratories, technological devices, corals, bones, hair and teeth. They convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vis versa. This oscillation between different energy states is a lively, material form of information transfer that, for example, stimulates bone growth, makes watches throb at a certain beat, or generates images through sonar and ultrasound devices.

OTTOsonics: designing an accessible ambisonics venue

OTTOsonics is a collective project by sound artists, developers, scholars and sound engineers working on accessible audio technologies for immersive sound production. Putting the focus on the needs of artists as well as non-specialized cultural and educational institutions, our objective is facilitating the use of immersive audio. In this workshop we will introduce and discuss our methods towards designing, building and maintaining an accessible high-density array of 3D-printed loudspeakers (100 speakers or more).

Perceiving augmented sound field: the Hybrid Audio Diffusion System (HADS)

The HADS is a monitoring system design that combines open headphones and speaker arrays to create augmented immersive sound fields. Combining the egocentric frame of reference fixed to the head (with headphones) and the allocentric frame of reference fixed to the room (with a 20.4 speaker array), the workshop focuses on presenting participants with multiple frames of reference in an immersive 3D Audio experience

Resist like Bacteria Encounter

Our project opens a non-disciplinary conversation between activists, biologists, hacker communities, artists and everyone interested in co-creating other possible future communication systems. In-Vitro Intelligence (IVI) suggests an intelligent, bioengineered system harbouring living neural networks that function as brains outside of the body. The workshop hosts believe it is inevitable that IVI driven entities will grow more sophisticated and find widespread use in, for instance, their IVI driven “Surrogate Performers”.

Introducing SADISS, a tool for bundling smartphones into monumental yet intricate sound systems or choirs

The workshop presents a hands-on introduction to SADISS, a web-based application developed in the research project “The Choir & the Sound System” at Anton Bruckner Private University. SADISS enables socially aggregated, digitally integrated sound systems to create two different forms of portable seas of sound.

SUB-MEDIA Workshop

The project “SUB-MEDIA” reflects on environmental influences on humans, such as media. Humans’ behaviour is inevitably subject to media conditioning. But does the origin of exploitative behaviour lie in the flood of media surrounding us, or inside of our own head?

Tools for Warming Planet

We live on a planet in flux–warming waters and land, chaotic weather, and unknown futures. Our adaptability is crucial to our survival. In response to this condition, this workshop will explore new tools for sensing, mapping, engaging, eating and responding to our changing environment. Participants will learn about the Tools for a Warming Planet crowd-sourced collection on exhibition and will collaborate on new prototype ideas moving forward. This workshop is part of the exhibition Collaborative Ecosystems for a Sustainable World, presented by the Institut Ramon Llull in collaboration with the .NewArt { foundation;} and Hac Te.
