Machine learning and hegemon
Is there a new renaissance or should there be? I´d rather pass. This is why:
Only some aspects of the historical renaissance in 15th and 16th century AD correspond to the common streotype of a humanistic, innovative and rational period. The historical renaissance is equally associated with colonialism, genocide, witch hunts, epidemics, magical thinking, alchemy, mercenary companies and oligarch autocrat rule enforced by poison, arson and other forms of discrete murder. Most of these aspects are interlinked and unfortunately more contemporary than on might hope. The lecture deals with how to avoid repeating these aspects of the renaissance in the 21st century.

Hito Steyerl (b. 1 January 1966) is a German filmmaker and writer who lives in Berlin. Steyerl’s prolific filmmaking and writing occupies a highly discursive position between the fields of art, philosophy and politics, constituting a deep exploration of late capitalism’s social, cultural and financial imaginaries. Her films and lectures have increasingly addressed the presentational context of art, while her writing has circulated widely through publication in both academic and art journals, often online.
