Ars Electronica Journeys is an entirely new format which evolved in the midst of rethinking the festival. Artists, researchers and creative producers were invited to prepare video journeys, providing interactive guided tours without the audience’s physical presence. Beyond that, the journey guides can really invite the viewers into their “world” by not just offering exclusive insight into their fields of expertise and artistic practices, but sharing surroundings relevant to their work — be it their labs, inspiring public places, or their favorite walking routes to mull over ideas. All of the journeys are realized in different frameworks: journeys within the Regional STARTS Centers project focus on innovation and collaborative practices; while the European Artificial Intelligence Lab journeys put a spotlight on cutting-edge topics and developments in the realm of artificial intelligence. Finally, the journeys within EMAP present exciting residencies at the intersection of art and science.

The parallel 66° 33′ 46″ passes in front of us. A still image exposed to 24 hours of light, on a 360° horizon. The staticity of the sea in the bay of Yelcho. An abrupt and mountainous environment added to the roar of the katabatic winds generates a rupture of perception in scale and distance. The wait. Advancing a small way to the base. Space for registration. The devices -through their sensors- capture the sense of place. A viewing angle of 46° in contrast with the spherical and immersive recording of the hertziosphere, where the alterity of bodies and anthropogenic frequencies in contrast with the autochthonous ones.

Biocomputer Rhythms is a piece for prepared piano and percussion. It is a musical duet between a pianist and an intelligent interactive biocomputer. The piano is prepared with electromagnetic actuators positioned inside the instrument to vibrate its strings. Electromagnetic actuators are also used to vibrate percussion instruments.

Full or empty; color or clear; zero or one; under or over – c o m p u t e r 1.0 imagines a display for the future, by looking at displays from our past. Artists Julian Goldman and Victoria Manganiello create a large-scale textile woven by hand using hollow polymer tubing and natural fiber thread. A patterned series of colored liquid/oil/air pixels will be pumped into the tubes in a sequence dictated by data from adjacent motion sensors and a series of computer-controlled valves, air compressors, and pumps. This textile will function as a lo-fi computer display, made with ancient natural materials and techniques juxtaposed with contemporary digital technologies.

Walk through Belgrade with the authors of the pervasive game problematizing different aspects of AI. AI / VI is a pervasive game using a smartphone. A specially designed application with an AI ​​function that acts as a guide through the game, occasionally uniting the player and AI into a symbiotic metaorganism. The game has no pre-set routes or endings; the path that opens is gradually shaped by the players. The mapped points of the game open spaces between different institutions in Belgrade and problematize the role of AI in private and public life. The goal of the game is to put the players in a position to re-examine the current human and algorithmic ways of decision-making and their consequences in the near future. 

AI x Art & Society

A series of panel discussions will be presented as part of the European ARTificial Intelligence Lab this year. Every evening, there will be one panel dedicated to a different topic, aiming to elucidate and educate about the impact of AI on society. The panels will bring AI related scientific, technological and artistic experts together in order to contribute to a critical and reflective debate beyond the technological and economic horizon of artificial intelligence.

Radicalization by Design will discuss the question of whether our media are radicalizing us. In connecting us, are social media also tearing us apart? How do trolls, conspiracy theories, memes and fringe platforms impact politics today? The panel discusses issues of freedom of speech, extreme speech and deplatforming.

The central segment of the Belgrade Garden is the premiere of the winning artwork from the national art+science selection for 2020. Digital Prayer by Kristina Tica uses ML techniques for establishing a connection between the canonical structure of an Orthodox icon and the image artificially generated by a computer program. The Garden will also host a musical performance I Sit and Worry About Her by Jasna Jovicevic (winner of the national selection in 2019), based on sonification of brain waves. Both works came out as results of interdisciplinary dialogues and an intensive scientific mentorship/residency program facilitated by CPN at principal national research centers.

The parallel 66° 33′ 46″ passes in front of us. A still image exposed to 24 hours of light, on a 360° horizon. The staticity of the sea in the bay of Yelcho. An abrupt and mountainous environment added to the roar of the katabatic winds generates a rupture of perception in scale and distance. The wait. Advancing a small way to the base. Space for registration. The devices -through their sensors- capture the sense of place. A viewing angle of 46° in contrast with the spherical and immersive recording of the hertziosphere, where the alterity of bodies and anthropogenic frequencies in contrast with the autochthonous ones.

Black Cube Nomadic Museums’ executive director and chief curator Cortney Lane Stell presents If once we ever were, a virtual recreation of a public sculpture and temporary monument by artist Jaime Carrejo that recognizes immigrants and their contributions to our communities. The monument is a triumphal arch composed of chain-link fencing that originally appeared in Denver, Colorado and acts as a metaphor for boundaries—the delineation of private and public space, the division of geographical borders, and the separation of rights.
