A sound performance based on a joint project that arose from two elements: noise, and an anthropological interest in how people react to the spontaneous invasion by «unthinkable sound» of their private and hermetic sound reality. Every audible sound has its source, but what could we do with the sudden appearance of unfamiliar disturbing noises that persistently change everyday life towards total unrecognisability? The mythologeme of the «Hum of the Earth» interests artists as a vantage from which to interpret non-everyday noise and its contexts: from the subjective-affective to the mass-eschatological.

Our senses have always been “mediated” – the sound can’t be heard without the “medium” of water or air. With more recent enhancements of immersive and sensing technologies, our ‘sensoriums’ have intensified and become more mediated than ever before (Caroline A Jones, 2006). The ‘constructivist’ potential of the sound has been used to a large extent in music or radio, whereas ‘experiential’ capabilities such as sensual and immersive properties of the sound have been mainly explored by art practices that emerge outside of purely musical environments.

Sound of Taiwan: Today’s creations become tomorrow’s cultural assets! Diverse styles showcase Taiwanese creativity. The Sound of Taiwan concert was a world premiere of two locally made compositions: Gordon Chin’s Piano Concerto No.1 and Nan-Chang Chien’s Symphony No. 4. The two compositions were debuted with: conductors Günther Herbig and Wen-Pin Chien and performed by pianist Chia-Hui Lu along-side the NSO. The concert is a milestone achievement in the continued development of Taiwan culture.

ATP spent his 20’s playing in various free parties and festival as part of the duo Frapading with his best bro Dezaks. Chorus of Zong sounds like a polyphonic choir accompanied by water noises. It is the voices of young Afro-Italians in dialogue with the echoing voices of their ancestors. The polyphonic chorus recites verses from the 2008 poetry collection Zong! by the poet M. NourbeSe Philip, in which she gives voice to the 150 enslaved people who were thrown overboard into the Atlantic Ocean by the crew of the ship that carried them across the ocean.

Fischgeist was recorded in a disused water tank in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin in August 2019. The nineteenth-century brick building is made up of five layered circles with a spiral staircase in the middle leading up to an exit to a hilltop. Inside, it’s humid and cold, the temperature always around 8–10 degrees Celsius. The building’s acoustics produce a long reverberation that lasts up to twenty seconds.

forme cangianti is an audiovisual live-coding composition. Before the performance, hundreds of mathematical functions were coded to govern the behaviours of the sound (Supercollider) and the visuals (shaders). At performance time, the performer gradually summoned these dormant functions, who “live code” variables of these equations. This artwork is part of ongoing research aimed at developing a visual identity to computer-generated and experimental electronic music.

Every performer plays a specific part, and then all parts are combined into a complex spatial sound field.

This Taaziye (Taziyeh) movie is about ritual of the Nooshabad people in a small city near Kashan, Iran. Annually, many people get together to mourn the martyrdom of Emam Hossein. The main feature of this event is that all activities in cities would be cancelled during the mourning carnival. This event is accompanied with live traditional, folklore music with a jubilant rhythm, but tragic lyrics. it’s the director has published a book about this subject, and defended her dissertation in master of theater directing in Turkey.

The central element of the kinetic sound sculpture is a dome overgrown with moss, its movement driven by readings of nitrogen oxide concentrations at various locations on our planet. The Fields Institute was closed to the public for a long time, but it has not been empty. Peculiar sounds and intriguing silences, the flows of the few individuals and janitors occasionally visiting the building made it surprisingly lively. Microorganisms, dust specs and other invisible guests populated the space undisturbed while the humans were away. The building is alive, and the artists created site-specific installations to reflect this condition.

Punkte (.–. ..- -. .-. – .) is an eight-headed chimera, researching and working within the field of sound and beyond. As part of the Arts and Sound Creation 2021-2022 postgraduate session at l’ENSA Bourges, we aim to reconsider the relationship between the fine arts and sound matters. Our name, Punkte, is a tribute to Ursula Bogner, a scientist in the pharmaceuticals sector and a composer (recordings 1969-1988) who perhaps never existed. It is also a nod to the action video Punkt (2006), in which Roman Signer, filmed sitting in profile in front of a blank canvas, waits for the explosion of the firecracker behind him to surprise him and set him in motion.

With 720-degree VR positioning and a 3D real-time motion capture system responding to suspension equipment, dancers break free from the spatial limitations and frame of the stage. Brilliant colors captivate the audience, creating a unique sensory experience! During Japanese rule (WWII), Sayion’s (17yr old TW Austronesian girl) death was manipulated and glorified with songs, paintings and movies to promote patriotism.

Farzan Badie is a DJ/music producer/audio engineer and radio host based in Tehran. He got his Diploma in Sound Engineering from the S.A.E Malaysia. Since then he has played in Iran, Germany, Hungary, Malaysia, Dubai, Cyprus and Turkey. He formed a DJ/Live act with British DJ Jules Dickens in Kuala Lumpur and worked in a public studio in Budapest for 2 years. Farzan is the co-founder and music director of “Beshknow”, an online radio and collective from Tehran.

Mohsen Ataei AKA Moss is a veteran Iranian underground DJ, starting electronic music back in 2000. Collecting and playing music has been an obsession with Moss since his teenage years, eventually leading him to study Audio Engineering and Electronic music production at SAE Paris. In the late 2000s, he became a member and producer of the Parisian underground cult band “Big Daddy’s Dead” performing at most of the city’s prestigious clubs.

Rojin Sharafi (IR/AT) is a Vienna-based, Tehran-born sound artist, performer and composer of acoustic and electronic music, freely crossing the borders between genres. She creates entirely unique musical textures using analogue, acoustic and augmented instruments, as well as digital tools of her own devising. She is currently pursuing her masters in sound engineering and composition at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. Her debut album “Urns Waiting to be Fed,” with Zabte Zote, has been lauded as “one of [2019’s] most ecstatic and fiercely original hours of music.”

Saba Alizadeh (IR): Born in Tehran in 1983, Saba Alizadeh is an unparalleled figure at the forefront of contemporary Iranian music. Alizadeh subsequently studied experimental sound practices at Calarts in Los Angeles. He began expanding his musical cosmos utilizing different instruments and methods of composing. Apart from Kamancheh, no-input mixer, modular synthesizer, laptop have been the main instruments that Alizadeh has created his sonic cosmos with. Alizadeh also uses a lot of manipulated historic audio recordings and field recordings in a neo-musique concrète fashion. Treating sound as an object has always been Alizadeh’s fascination.

Curated by composer and music educator Daniel Hutchinson, Stories We Told Ourselves is an online music series with new works in video format created in isolation by six outstanding artists: Reza Khota, Zorada Temmingh, Nicholas Aphane, Kyla-Rose Smith, Eugene Skeef, and Garth Erasmus. Through their works, the six participants reflect on the theme of isolation during the Covid-19 lockdowns, and the stories they told themselves to cope during this period. While the first three works showcase their improvisation approaches through the jazz guitar, pipe piano organ, and expressive dance, respectively, the latter three fuse original scores with photography, visual art and poetry.

The Earth’s Pulse is a performance by Argentinian artist Joaquín Fargas, where the artist intertwines our Mother Earth with the Universe by connecting special seismometers to his own body, receiving signals sent by interacting audiences from all over the world, and sending the signals btained to outer space through radio telescopes. The audience will be able to interact with the artist iin real time during the performance, by sending words and relating a message of their choice to Mother Earth (Pacha Mama and Atabey) and to the Universe.

Long-form arrangement from composer Desert Bloom consisting of three movements, “on the tendencies of trauma and resilience” blends classical form and experimental electronic instrumentation alongside drummer Austin Tufts’ live drum improvisations. Conceptually, this piece delves into reactions to traumas experienced by women of color, the lack of a societal discourse on the subject and the concept of resilience, widely used as a scapegoat to avoid providing further support or to genuinely confront our own biases and toxic behaviors.

The work explores a number of sonic environments manipulated through a custom interface utilising hand controlled pressure sensors, foot controlled potentiometers, and reactive incandescent bulbs. All gestures used for control could be conceived of as exerting pressure on the mechanism, and so the sonic and visual environments are arranged to react in some manors which may represent such a relationship. The interface utilised a Bela, a K8064 DC Controlled Dimmer, and is coded in Pure Data.

Taiwan was lucky to survive the COVID-19 attack last year. In May of this year, we could not escape from the real challenge of COVID-19. The whole Taiwan suddenly entered the third level of alert. During the epidemic, many things had to be adjusted and redesigned in time. Every building entrance is covered with QR-Code, everyone has become a “sticker man” and a “mask man”. People “qualify” to enter buildings only if they wear masks, get a temperature sticker and scan the QR-Code. Under the epidemic, everyone’s right to life is equal. The society has produced an alternative democracy. The order of freedom and rights are reorganized. We launched the “Diaries in the Deal of COVID-19″ campaign, and encouraged everyone to create and record his diary during the epidemic. On September 10th, we will hold a press forum where everyone will show their diary and share their thoughts and life experiences during the epidemic.

That Unseen Vibrance

Can our conscious listening effect the world around us? That unseen vibrance. These are dense vibrations, larger than our bodies, larger than our eardrums. They work through us. They present as oceanic. I have a sense of being inside the sound, submerged in another medium, molten, or perhaps growing wings. Of enormous pressure depth yet vibrance shimmer. To dive into the oceanic with our own airborne sounds, feet on the ground, ears underwater. What animal could hear like this?
