Breathe to flow
Anna Nacher

The way we, as humans, participate in the vibrational fields and flows of energy of the Planet Earth is embodied practice, even if the process often remains somewhat mysterious, unnoticed or unacknowledged. This workshop will explore how a human vocalization, which is nothing else than amplified and conscious breathing, can become a practice of inquiry into the planetary water cycle.

Ceci n’est pas un mix
ATP (FR/LR)

ATP spent his 20’s playing in various free parties and festival as part of the duo Frapading with his best bro Dezaks. Together they developed their signature sound, gathering influences from tribal freetekno, psytrance and electronic madness between piles of speakers and diesel emanations. Since then ATP has been pursuing his own sonic exploration from electronic to speedcore with a strong emphasis on heavy drum beats and screeching, psychedelic synth lines.

Chorus of Zong, 2020
Binta Diaw (SN/IT)

Chorus of Zong sounds like a polyphonic choir accompanied by water noises. It is the voices of young Afro-Italians in dialogue with the echoing voices of their ancestors. The polyphonic chorus recites verses from the 2008 poetry collection Zong! by the poet M. NourbeSe Philip, in which she gives voice to the 150 enslaved people who were thrown overboard into the Atlantic Ocean by the crew of the ship that carried them across the ocean.

Conceptronica, Ontologica & Phenomenologica
M. (FI/US)

This performance focuses on the default staging of digital music, which most often includes someone sitting or standing behind a computer. This is especially true in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, when performers and audiences alike are relegated to screen-based interactions.

[ˈdaːzaɪn]
Sective – Arno Deutschbauer (AT) and Micha Elias Pichlkastner (AT/CA)

The AV performance [ˈdaːzaɪn] conceptually revolves around the detachment of communication and interaction from the human body into a virtual and digital space and the consequences this can have for us as physical and mental beings. A phenomenon that has obviously also been accelerated by the effects of the Covid19 pandemic.

Fischgeist (fish spirit), 2020
Tomoko Sauvage (JP)

Fischgeist was recorded in a disused water tank in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin in August 2019. The nineteenth-century brick building is made up of five layered circles with a spiral staircase in the middle leading up to an exit to a hilltop. Inside, it’s humid and cold, the temperature always around 8–10 degrees Celsius. The building’s acoustics produce a long reverberation that lasts up to twenty seconds.

forme cangianti
Fabio Morreale (IT)

forme cangianti is an audiovisual live-coding composition. Before the performance, hundreds of mathematical functions were coded to govern the behaviours of the sound (Supercollider) and the visuals (shaders). At performance time, the performer gradually summoned these dormant functions, who “live code” variables of these equations. This artwork is part of ongoing research aimed at developing a visual identity to computer-generated and experimental electronic music.

Hum of the Earth
Liliia Akivenson (RU), Evgenii Savenko (RU)

A sound performance based on a joint project that arose from two elements: noise, and an anthropological interest in how people react to the spontaneous invasion by «unthinkable sound» of their private and hermetic sound reality. Every audible sound has its source, but what could we do with the sudden appearance of unfamiliar disturbing noises that persistently change everyday life towards total unrecognisability? The mythologeme of the «Hum of the Earth» interests artists as a vantage from which to interpret non-everyday noise and its contexts: from the subjective-affective to the mass-eschatological.

Acoustic material of the work consists of sounds recorded using contact microphones attached to the ground, trees, rocks. In addition, performers use musical expression interface and sound synthesis engine, specifically developed for this performance. Every performer plays a specific part, and then all parts are combined into a complex spatial sound field.

Pheek/Iregui present “INVERSION”
Pheek (CA) & Daniel Iregui (CA)

In the age of Instagram, polished profiles and overly-sanitized cleanliness, INVERSION instead attempts to show the levels of spontaneity, uncertainty and questioning underlying musical creation. Daniel Iregui’s enormous black mirror, placed behind Pheek and fitted with a device allowing it to vibrate to sound, allows spectators to experience the artists’ various states of mind during an unpredictable yet intuitive journey, where everything will become crystal-clear to those with the patience to wait.

The central element of the kinetic sound sculpture is a dome overgrown with moss, its movement driven by readings of nitrogen oxide concentrations at various locations on our planet. Moss is regarded as a bio-indicator of air pollution, and this forms Barotti’s first collaboration with a living organism.

My Shoes, Your Walk
Jonas Sun

This video depicts a revisit of a soundwalk that provided me countless inspiration and solace during the past year. Recorded with contact microphones chiseled and wired in the soles of my shoes, the soundtrack brings us back to last autumn, whereas my camera dangles in the summer heat, and my mind wanders across time.

In the mix: O-Wells
O-Wells (DE)

What ties O-Wells‘ career together is a certain emotionality that gently addresses the listener from the side. This approach to music-making is naturally continued in his style of djing: Incorporating his personal history of producing ambient, breakbeat and house to fast-paced Detroit-influenced techno under his second moniker Frankfurt Bass, Lennard Poschmann draws from this rich pool to create his own musical language.

Grounded by Milo Johnson’s bass lines, and reinforced melodically with his horn and string accompaniments, the team -featuring Alex Tibbitts, Quan, Samito and Boogieman- promises to transport the listener from rain forests and remote island villages to busy urban underground.

PostSensorium. Hearing Notes
Krista Dintere (LV), Ivo Taurins (LV), Lauris Smits (LV), RIXC (LV), LiepU MPLab (LV)

Our senses have always been “mediated” – the sound can’t be heard without the “medium” of water or air. With more recent enhancements of immersive and sensing technologies, our ‘sensoriums’ have intensified and become more mediated than ever before (Caroline A Jones, 2006). The ‘constructivist’ potential of the sound has been used to a large extent in music or radio, whereas ‘experiential’ capabilities such as sensual and immersive properties of the sound have been mainly explored by art practices that emerge outside of purely musical environments.

Punkte (.–. ..- -. .-. – .) is an eight-headed chimera, researching and working within the field of sound and beyond. As part of the Arts and Sound Creation 2021-2022 postgraduate session at l’ENSA Bourges, we aim to reconsider the relationship between the fine arts and sound matters. Our name, Punkte, is a tribute to Ursula Bogner, a scientist in the pharmaceuticals sector and a composer (recordings 1969-1988) who perhaps never existed. It is also a nod to the action video Punkt (2006), in which Roman Signer, filmed sitting in profile in front of a blank canvas, waits for the explosion of the firecracker behind him to surprise him and set him in motion.

Stories We Told Ourselves
Daniel Hutchinson (ZA), Reza Khota (ZA), Zorada Temmingh (ZA), Nicholas Aphane (ZA), Kyla-Rose Smith (US/ZA), Eugene Skeef (UK/ZA), Garth Erasmus (ZA)

Curated by composer and music educator Daniel Hutchinson, Stories We Told Ourselves is an online music series with new works in video format created in isolation by six outstanding artists: Reza Khota, Zorada Temmingh, Nicholas Aphane, Kyla-Rose Smith, Eugene Skeef, and Garth Erasmus. Through their works, the six participants reflect on the theme of isolation during the Covid-19 lockdowns, and the stories they told themselves to cope during this period. While the first three works showcase their improvisation approaches through the jazz guitar, pipe piano organ, and expressive dance, respectively, the latter three fuse original scores with photography, visual art and poetry.

Synaesthetic Syntax: Sounding Animation / Visualising Audio

Coming together as a series of online events, this year’s Expanded Animation symposium continues a dialogue about relationships between the senses, in particular the auditory and the visual. What are the rules, principles, and processes that govern correlations between sound and animation? How might these embodied sensations be explored, unpacked and reassembled in our age of virtual communication intensified by COVID-19?

Desert Bloom presents “on the tendencies of trauma & resilience”
Desert Bloom (CA) & Austin Tufts (CA)

Long-form arrangement from composer Desert Bloom consisting of three movements, “on the tendencies of trauma and resilience” blends classical form and experimental electronic instrumentation alongside drummer Austin Tufts’ live drum improvisations. Conceptually, this piece delves into reactions to traumas experienced by women of color, the lack of a societal discourse on the subject and the concept of resilience, widely used as a scapegoat to avoid providing further support or to genuinely confront our own biases and toxic behaviors.

trialPressure
Liam Pram (NZ)

The work explores a number of sonic environments manipulated through a custom interface utilising hand controlled pressure sensors, foot controlled potentiometers, and reactive incandescent bulbs. All gestures used for control could be conceived of as exerting pressure on the mechanism, and so the sonic and visual environments are arranged to react in some manors which may represent such a relationship. The interface utilised a Bela, a K8064 DC Controlled Dimmer, and is coded in Pure Data.

The power of the voice (s) allied with poetry and (deep) listening are perhaps ways to deal with urgent terrestrial and human problems caused to the biosphere, which have been urgent for a long time now. The work is a sonic collage, like a surrealist poem based on podcasts conducted since 2018.

Vibrations Matter: Art & Science of Deep Listening
Victoria Vesna, James Gimzewski, Carlo Ventura, Charles Taylor, and members of the Art Sci Now collective members — Ivana Dama, Clinton Van Arnam, John Brumley, and Paul Geluso

This event addresses vibrations from the point of view of visual and sound artists considering the scientific research into matter, brain waves, human and animal voice, environmental noise and outer space. Warawar Kjaua – Chajnantor (extended)
Olaff Peña Pastene (CL/ES), Samuel Domínguez (CL/GB)

The audio track is a collabora1on between Olaff Peña Pastene and Samuel Domínguez, presented as an extended version of Olaff’s original song Warawar Kjaua, which uses the Tihuanaco’s civilisa1on cosmovision to interpret ALMA Observatory’s data. This is entangled with a fake field recording created using ar1ficial intelligence and slight musical interpreta1ons created by Domínguez.
